The May 18 Democratic Uprising is the torch for Korea democracy !(1)

The Article 1 of the Constitution specifies “The Republic of Korea shall be a democratic republic.”, “The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea shall reside in the people, and all state authority shall emanate from the people.” The May 18 Democratic Uprising is a struggle and a will of the people to protect the basic democratic ideology of the Republic of Korea. The citizens who aspired democracy were determined to redress a injustice social system. Especially in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, they fought against new military forces such as Chun Doo-hwan, who illegally seized power, and achieved democracy. Gwangju Democratic Uprising, which occurred 41 years ago, is echoing all over the world beyond South Korea, leading to Myanmar's democratic movement. Myanmar, which was colonized by Britain and Japan, achieved independence in 1948 around the same time as Korea, but was disrupted by the military government in 1962 because of a power struggle within political leaders and racial conflicts. The anger of Myanmar citizens, who were groaning in poverty and unfair politics due to military rule, led to the massive uprising called ‘8888 Uprising’, starting with students and religious people. A strong desire for democratization spread among Myanmar people, but the military government suppressed them with brutal violence, killing more than 3,000 people in the process. They seemed to cooperate for Myanmar's transition to democracy by promising to hold an election on 27 May 1990 and reforming the Constitution in 2008 under persistent demands of its citizens and pressures of international community. Furthermore, they ushered the first civilian government in 2015. On 1 February 2021, however, Myanmar's military staged a coup again. Myanmar people are now fighting for democracy at the risk of themselves by organizing a big demonstrator. Looking at Myanmar people who are undaunted by the brutal bloody crackdown and continuing peaceful resistance, we should never forget the memory of the May 18th, which began 41 years ago in Gwangju, a shrine of democratization.
